The NYPD fatally shot an unarmed 36 year-old man following a car chase through the Bronx. According to police reports, the 2009 Nissan Z was spotted driving erratically around 12PM Tuesday on 242nd Street. Police began approach the vehicle and the chase ensued. While trying to out run police on the Saw Mill River Parkway, the driver of the vehicle crashed into several vehicles.
Police wee able to take in one of the passengers, 25-year-old Akeem Smith, after the crash, however, 36 year-old Miguel Espinal escaped nto Tibbets Brook Park.
Police were followed Espinal into the wooded area, and fired off a single shot killing the suspect. NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis told the New York Times that “no weapon has been recovered” from the scene of the incident.”
While it still remains unclear which of two officers fired the shot, Romeo Francis, has been named in a civil suit that alleging The officer’s lawyer, Elizabeth Crotty, said, “It is an active case so I cannot comment on his direct involvement, but he was the arresting officer.”
