Sade returns with a new song “The Big Unknown” from British director Steve McQueen’s new film, Widows.
The soul icon penned the track specifically for Widows‘ final scene. According to a press release, McQueen “encouraged her to dig deep within to write a song about loss and survival.” The stirring song was inspired by the film, but stays true to Sade’s timeless sound.
“It was an honor to work with such a legend,” McQueen told the Los Angeles Times. “Sade is an incomparable talent and incredible artist who so rarely releases new material, but luckily the original series of Widows had deeply resonated with her.”
Widows, the big-screen adaptation of the British television series, is now open in theaters across the U.K.
Sade is reportedly working on her first album in eight years, according to her longtime collaborator Stuart Matthewman. “When we’re happy, then we’ll let everyone else hear it,” Matthewman told Rated R&B in July.
