Exclusive: Trevor Jackson Talks New Album, ‘grown-ish,’ & ‘SuperFly’

Posted by Unknown on 4:45 PM

Trevor Jackson is a triple threat. Thanks to a new album, hit television show, and film, the singer-actor-dancer is ready to take the world by storm.

The 21-year-old recently sat down with Rap-Up to talk about his many projects, starting with his upcoming LP, Rough Drafts, Pt. 1, which drops Friday (March 23) featuring the single “Apocalypse.”

“It’s called Rough Drafts because I feel like, especially in [this] day and age, everybody is trying to be perfect,” he says of the self-written project. “They’re trying to emulate something on social media. Everybody wants the finished product. They see other people doing well and want to skip a few steps.”

But Jackson is more enthusiastic about the process. “If you go to college, you can’t get the final draft first,” he adds. “You’ve got to do a couple of rough drafts, revise it… I’m just trying to show people that it’s OK to be at peace within the steps getting there, to wherever you’re trying to get.”

Jackson, who’s currently on Justine Skye’s “Ultraviolet Tour,” stars as a college student on the critically-acclaimed Freeform series “grown-ish.” After working on a pair of dark roles, Trevor is relieved to play Aaron Jackson on the Kenya Barris-created “black-ish” spin-off.

Before landing the role, Trevor recalls praying for change. “I don’t want to do any more sad shit,” he said. “After I auditioned, [Barris] was like, ‘You’re our guy.'”

Up next, Jackson is set to star as Youngblood Priest in Director X’s SuperFly reboot. Co-starring Jason Mitchell, Jennifer Morrison, and Andrea Londo, the film is set to hit theaters June 15.

“I’m so excited,” he beams. “It’s a classic film we’re remaking. It’s basically about this guy who is really, really young but he also has a very, very top position in the drug game. He wants to leave, but because he has his hand in so many pots, and so many people depend on him for bread, it’s kind of difficult.”

Part of Jackson’s excitement also comes from the action-packed nature of the film, which he says will feature “a lot of fighting.” “I did all of my own stunts,” he reveals. “My back hurts. My knees hurt. I went through a lot of bullshit.”
