NBA: Kevin Durant Claims Tweet From 2010 Criticizing Lebron Was Actually About Penny Hardaway

Kevin Durant has been the talk of the NBA this entire season after he made the decision to join the Warriors over the summer. With his return to Oklahoma City on Saturday night, there has been even more attention and media requests to speak with Durant as he sets to face off against Russell Westbrook and the Thunder. He sat down with “The Bill Simmons Podcast” to talk all things basketball as well as off the court stuff.

Among the topics Durant and Simmons touched on was his tweet back in July of 2010, shortly after Lebron James and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami.

At the time and pretty much ever since, the tweet was looked at as a shot at Lebron for going to the heat and forming the big 3.

When Durant himself decided to make a move similar to what Bron did, the tweet came under even more scrutiny because he looked like a giant hypocrite.

While talking to Simmons, he claims the tweet in question was never about calling Lebron out but instead about Penny Hardaway and his sudden desire to join the Heat.

Let me clear this up, because a lot of people talk to me about (it and say) I took a shot at him on Twitter. If you go back and look at when I posted that, I posted that later in the month, you want to know why?

Penny Hardaway came out and said, ‘I would love to play for the Heat, I think I could help them win the championship.’ And I’m like, ‘Come on, Penny. You’ve been out of the game. I played against you my rookie year, it’s like three years later, man. What are you doing?’ But it was a fake article. So I tweeted that. And now everybody’s like, ‘Well, you was criticizing LeBron.’ I signed an extension right after LeBron decided to go to Miami and a lot of people asked me about that, I said, ‘Cool, for (the Heat). We play them three times, I can’t wait to play them, it’s going to be cool.’

I didn’t criticize him, I was criticizing Penny Hardaway in this fake article I read. So a lot of people took that and ran with it.

The story about Penny wasn’t fake news. It was a real report at the time but nonetheless, it’s pretty much up to the reader if they believe Durant’s explanation.

He is correct that he didn’t tweet that for another couple weeks after Lebron already announced his move but it was probably about everyone on the Heat or players wanting to go to the Heat at that point.
