Chance The Rapper Speaks On Turning Down Kanye’s Contract Offer

Posted by Unknown on 11:18 AM

chance-kanyeChance The Rapper has made it known that he values his independence as an artist.

“I don’t agree with the way labels are set up. I don’t agree that anyone should sign 360 deals, or sign away their publishing, or take most of the infrastructure that’s included in a formal deal.” he told Beats 1 Radio’s Zane Lowe earlier this year.

But there was one inquiry from a label that did get Chance thinking.

In an interview with ABC, Chance speaks on turning down an offer from his Chicago hero Kanye West’s GOOD Music label.

“It’s not easy at all, definitely not telling Kanye,” Chance explained. “It’s definitely hard keeping that resistance, but I want to teach people that it’s doable without.”

“I wanted to give the idea of freedom back to artists and one of the biggest things is control of how you release your music,” he continued. “So, streaming and free releases—I figured that’d be a good beacon to have people at least pick up on what I was doing as an independent artist.”

Chance’s latest label-less project is the Merry Christmas Lil Mama mixtape he dropped with Jeremih. Check it:
