Raven-Symoné has been the center of many debates after she made the comment to Oprah Winfrey that she does not consider herself African-American. It’s been nine months since she made the comment and the actress and talk-show host is still defending herself. Recently, she opened up about her desire to simply be called “American.”

For The View co-host it seems to all boil down to her hatred of labels. She does not want to be called a ‘gay African-American’ but rather just a “human who loves humans.”
In her quest to keep labels away from her she said, “I don’t like labels, but everyone needs them to understand what is going on. So, okay, I get it. Give me ‘American.’ There is nothing wrong with being an American, purely.” She added, “
I think that there are a lot of different races that fall under ‘American,’ so past that you really just are sub-categorizing me over and over again, I’m not disowning my history in any way. My family has been here for almost 400 years. We’re American.”
The former Disney Channel star understands that not everyone can wrap their brain around the way she thinks or feels about the issue, and does not expect them to either. She said, “This is me and what I feel about myself. But if you identify as African-American, then you’re African-American,” she added, “What right do I have to tell you what you are and what you’re not?”
