Woman Sentenced To 12 Years For Snatching Newborn From Harlem Hospital

Posted by Unknown on 4:43 AM

The woman who snatched a 19-day-old sick baby girl from Harlem Hospital and raised her as her own for more than two decades was sentenced Monday to 12 years in prison – far less than what prosecutors and the baby’s dad had pressed for. Click below to read the rest of the story.

“It should have been longer,” said the father Carl Tyson after the sentencing of kidnapper Ann Pettway in Manhattan Federal Court.
Prosecutors sought a 20-year prison sentence, saying Pettway “brazenly” took infant Carlina White from her hospital crib in 1987 and raised her in Bridgeport, Conn., as Nejdra (Netty) Nance for 23 years.
Only Carlina’s biological mother, Joy White, said she was satisfied with the sentence.
“It’s not going to make up for the time she was gone, so it doesn’t matter how much they give her,” White told reporters.
In court, White described the horror of finding out that her daughter had been taken on Aug. 5, 1987 after she brought Carlina to the Harlem Hospital ER hours earlier to be treated for a 104-degree fever.
“All I could think was how could anyone rip out an intravenous tube from my daughter’s tiny leg, when she had such a high temperature and needed the drip to survive,” White said.
She said since Carlina came back into her life, her daughter has been in an “overwrought emotional state.”
“I love my daughter, and I want to be there for her,” said White, 41. “But it breaks my hearts listening to her speak about her ‘auntie’ or her ‘little brother,’ when in fact she is not talking about our family, but another family that has claimed her as their own.”
She said every time she sees her daughter she still can’t believe her eyes.
“My daughter is here. But she is not home yet,” White said. “Pray God, she will be soon.”
