The names of the mother and daughter were not immediately released. The stabbing was reported by a family friend about 10:30 a.m.
A man in the home intervened and held the mother there until police arrived, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Tuesday.
“We’re still trying to sort out the facts, the reason why this happened,” Kelly said.
The commissioner said the mom and child may have been staying there temporarily.
Residents and people who witnessed the emergency response in the otherwise peaceful middle class area were shocked by the violence Tuesday.
A neighbor told the Daily News that the child was flailing her arms as she was carried out to the ambulance wrapped in a gore-soaked bed sheet.
“When they brought her out, she was bloodied up in sheets,” neighbor Lindsay Fortune said.
“One of the EMTs came out and said, ‘Hurry up, hurry up. It’s a baby,’” he added.
Another neighbor, Katara Daniel, 34, was aghast.
“I’m disgusted. I’m hurt. I’m bothered. I have two daughters and I run a day care,” she said.
“I’m just praying that the child is OK.”
