100 Swimmers Attacked By Piranhas

Posted by Unknown on 7:21 PM

Brazilian authorities are struggling to rein in a surge in the piranha population at a northeast beach after about 100 swimmers were recently bitten.

Brazilian newspaper UOL Noticias reported that 100 bathers were treated at a local hospital after the flesh-nibbling frenzy near Terezina last weekend.
“Since they have no predators, piranhas have started attacking people on the beach,” said Romildo Mafra, an environmental official in Piaui state told the paper.
Officials have flooded local waters with tilapia hoping to curtail the piranha’s hunger somewhat.
