Roxanne Shanté’s life story is coming to television. Next month, Netflix is set to release the anxiously-awaited Roxanne Roxanne biopic about the life of the influential MC.

Directed and written by Michael Larnell, the film stars Chanté Adams, Nia Long, and Mahershala Ali, as well as Elvis Nolasco, Kevin Phillips, Shenell Edmonds, and Adam Horovitz.

From the producers of Fruitvale Station and Dope, Roxanne Roxanne focuses on the life of Lolita “Roxanne Shanté” Gooden, depicting her early years as a teen in Queens and her rise to prominence.

Chanté Adams has garnered acclaim for her role as a young Shanté in the film. Last year, she won the Sundance Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Performance.

“I play Roxanne Shanté from the age of 14 up to about 18,” she told Deadline. “I had about a week and a half between the moment I was cast to our first day of shooting, so I went that time, hours each day, just researching her on the Internet, watching video interviews and her performances, reading articles, anything that I could get my hands on about her that would bring me closer to the character.”

Roxanne dropped her debut album Bad Sister in 1989 followed by The Bitch is Back in 1992. Some of her biggest singles include “Roxanne’s Revenge,” “Roxanne, Roxanne,” and more.

Roxanne Roxanne premieres March 23 on Netflix.
