Ex-Citigroup Executive Pleads Guilty To Stealing Nearly $23 Million

Posted by Unknown on 9:04 AM

A former Citigroup executive pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing nearly $23 million and wiring it to his personal bank account. Gary Foster was a vice president in Citigroup’s treasury finance department. He lived like a company CEO, purchasing luxury cars and expensive properties in Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey with the embezzled funds.

Foster copped to a single count of bank fraud in Brooklyn Federal Court, admitting that he “executed a scheme to defraud Citigroup” from September 2003 until his arrest in June.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Yaeger said the scheme was simple: from his office in Long Island City, Foster wired millions from various Citigroup accounts to his personal bank account at J.P. Morgan Chase.
Incredibly, Citigroup didn’t notice $22.9 million was missing until a recent internal audit.
“I don’t think it is in Mr. Foster’s best interest to blame Citigroup for dropping the ball,” defense lawyer Isabel Kirshner said outside court.
The feds have seized about $16 million worth of Foster’s assets, including Maserati and Ferrari sedans – and a $1 million condo in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., with spectacular Hudson River views and high-end electronic gadgets like a bathroom mirror that converts to a video screen.
Foster, 35, a graduate of Rutgers University, faces up to 10 years in prison. No sentencing date was set.

Eddie Murphy To Host The Oscars

Posted by Unknown on 8:58 AM

Comedian Eddie Murphy has been picked to host the Academy Awards in February for the first time in his career. Murphy said he was honoured to be joining the likes of Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg.

Tuesday’s announcement makes Oscar organizers appear as if they are aiming for laughs in 2012, after this year’s performance by co-hosts, dramatic actors Anne Hathaway and James Franco, fell flat with critics and many viewers.
The hosting job pairs Murphy, who began performing stand-up comedy at age 15 before joining TV’s Saturday Night Live, with director Brett Ratner, another Oscar first-timer best known for action movies and comedies.

Alongside Ratner’s Oscar co-producer Don Mischer, the pair bring a decidedly comic edge to the show that has tried to stay relevant among young and mainstream moviegoers as its major awards in recent years primarily have gone to dramas aimed mostly at older audiences.
In a statement, Murphy said he was honoured to be joining the likes of Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg, among the many hosts of the show that next year will see its 84th edition.
“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever,” Ratner said in a statement.

“With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances – especially on stage – I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don and I want to produce in February,” he said.
The move is a distinct departure from recent years in which the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has focused on variety and elaborate song-and-dance numbers by hosts or co-hosts including Hathaway and Hugh Jackman.

For this past February’s show, the producers were Mischer and Bruce Cohen, who helped bring dramas such as American Beauty and Milk to movie theatres. Last year, the producers included Adam Shankman, director of the musical Hairspray.
By contrast, Ratner is the director of movies such as the Rush Hour cop series and comic book flick X-Men: The Last Stand. He is well-known to have a knowledge and love of film history, which is why the Academy chose him and he, in turn, brought Murphy to Hollywood’s biggest awards program.

“I’m looking forward to working with Brett and Don on creating a show that is enjoyable for both the fans at home and for the audience at the Kodak Theatre as we all come together to celebrate and recognize the great film contributions and collaborations from the past year,” Murphy said.
Murphy, 50, made his feature film debut in 1982 with the buddy comedy 48 Hours and went on to star in the Beverly Hills Cop, The Nutty Professor and Shrek franchises. All told, movies in which he has performed have earned more than $7 billion at global box offices, the Academy said.

President Obama Looking At $300 Billion Job Package

Posted by Unknown on 8:56 AM

People familiar with the White House deliberations on a jobs package say President Barack Obama is considering a plan totaling about $300 billion in tax cuts and spending for 2012.

Two of the biggest measures are expected to be a one-year extension of a payroll tax cut for workers and a continuation of unemployment benefits. Those items would total about $170 billion.
The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plan was still being finalized and some proposals could be changed before Obama introduces his plan Thursday night in his address to Congress.

The White House is considering tax incentives for businesses that hire as well as spending for public works projects.
The package is designed to increase consumer demand, speed up infrastructure construction and spur hiring.

Pilot Reveals Shocking Details About Threats Against Air Force One on 9/11

Posted by Unknown on 8:40 AM

As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, Colonel Mark Tillman, who piloted Air Force One on that fateful day, is revealing shocking details about threats against the president and his aircraft.

As he was flying President Bush from Sarasota, Florida, Tillman was warned that an unidentified aircraft was bearing down on the plane. Tillman said, “As we got over Gainesville, Florida, we got the word from Jacksonville Center. They said ‘Air Force One, you have traffic behind you, and basically above you, descending into you. We are not in contact with them and they’ve shut their transponder off.’”

In addition, an unidentified man near the runway forced Air Force One to take off in the opposite direction.
Given that officials had no idea what the capabilities of the terrorists were, Tillman didn’t want to take chances and asked for support from fighter jets.
Air Force One and President Bush landed safely, but the attack forced Tillman to scrutinize the security of the aircraft. He said, “We had to make sure that every little hole, chink in our armor, had to be filled so we could protect the president. “

Obama Administration to Drop Troop Levels in Iraq to 3,000

Posted by Unknown on 8:37 AM

The Obama administration has decided to drop the number of U.S. troops in Iraq at the end of the year down to 3,000, marking a major downgrade in force strength.

Senior commanders are said to be livid at the decision, which has already been signed off by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
Panetta, touring sites Tuesday in advance of the Sept. 11 10th commemoration, insisted “no decision has been made” on the number of troops to stay in Iraq.

“That obviously will be the subject of negotiations with the Iraqis and as a result of those negotiations. As I said no decision has been made of what the number will be,” he said.
Currently, about 45,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Iraq. The generals on the ground had requested that the number of troops remaining in Iraq at the end of the year reach about 27,000. But, there was major pushback about “the cost and the political optics” of that decision that the number was then reduced to 10,000.

Commanders said they could possibly make that work “in extremis,” in other words, meaning they would be pushing it to make that number work security-wise and manpower-wise.
Now, sources confirm that the administration has pushed the Pentagon to cut the number even lower, and commanders are concerned for the safety of the U.S. troops who would remain there.
“We can’t secure everybody with only 3,000 on the ground nor can we do what we need to with the Iraqis,” one source said.
A senior military official said by reducing the number of troops to 3,000, the White House has effectively reduced the mission to training only.

“There is almost no room for security operations in that number; it will be almost purely a training mission,” this official said. The official added that a very small number of troops within that 3,000 will be dedicated to counter-terrorism efforts, but that’s not nearly what Gen. Lloyd Austin, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, wanted.
This shift is seen by various people as a cost-saving measure and a political measure. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday that the U.S. has operated responsibly to meet the year-end deadline to remove troops from Iraq, per a 2008 Status of Forces Agreement.
He added that negotiations with the Iraqis will determine the outcome, and while costs are a factor in every decision, the administration makes decisions on what is best for the United States.

The only administration official fighting for at least 10,000 forces to stay in Iraq at the end of the year was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, sources said. But she has lost the battle.
Responding to the news, Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., who has traveled to Iraq many times, said that in all the conversations he has had on force strength, he has “never heard a number as low as 3,000 troops to secure the gains Iraqis have won over the years.”
Lieberman said his first question for the administration is whether the number is one Iraqis had requested or if it was chosen according to other criteria.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said reducing the troop presence to 3,000 “would put at risk all the United States has fought for in Iraq.”
“The biggest winner of a U.S. decision to move to 3,000 troops in Iraq would the Iranian regime. The ayatollahs would rejoice,” he said.
Any of the plans will require Iraqi approval, and on that front, the Pentagon recently secured a commitment from the Iraqis to start negotiations, but they have not agreed to any number.
“Discussions with the Iraqis on our post-2011 strategic relationship are ongoing, and no decisions on troop levels have been made,” said Panetta spokesman George Little. “We continue to proceed with troop withdrawals as directed by the president.”
On Tuesday, the head of the three-province Kurdish autonomous region in the north of Iraq, warned that if American troops leave sectarian violence might resurface. Massoud Barzani urged the central Iraqi government to sign an agreement with the U.S. to keep forces in the country.

Winter Threatens Repairs Of Irene-Damaged Roads That Will Cost Up To $1.5 Billion

Posted by Unknown on 8:35 AM

Northeastern states struggling to rebuild hundreds of roads and dozens of bridges in the wake of Hurricane Irene are facing another natural threat The winter season.

The end of construction season is fast approaching in New England and upstate New York. By November it will be too cold to lay asphalt, and by December snow and ice will cover the mountains, leaving towns dangerously isolated and possibly dissuading tourists during the region’s ski season. Vermont officials said Monday they are renting quickly built, military-style temporary bridges as a stopgap measure.
“We’re going to be into winter before we know it,” Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin told reporters last week. “We’ve got a lot of highways to rebuild, bridges to rebuild, before snow starts to fly in Vermont.”
Raging floods gouged and closed more than 300 local roads and state routes in Vermont and damaged at least 22 bridges in the state, marooning people for days in at least 13 towns. Irene ripped another 150 roads in neighboring New York state. Some of the washed-out roads have gaping gullies 30 feet deep.
Road building experts say that if the work isn’t done by mid-November, winter’s cold, ice and snows will prevent any substantial progress until after the spring thaws.
The consequences could be serious: residents forced to make 30-mile detours — on mountain roads, some of them unpaved— to the nearest grocery store or doctor, businesses struggling for customers and a possible hit to the state’s all-important winter tourism.
“The window is short,” said Cathy Voyer, president of the Vermont chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America. “You can’t pour concrete, you can’t pour asphalt. Stabilizing cranes in the winter would be very difficult.”
Other states wrestling with post-Irene road repairs include New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina and Virginia.
Brad Sant, vice president of safety for the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, predicted the affected Northern states will have to settle for “Band-Aid” repairs until the spring. Though the level of Irene’s road destruction is not unprecedented for a hurricane, “What makes this more challenging is the location of the destruction, being in the Northeast with those early, cold-weather conditions that are likely to come,” Sant said.
To help Vermont get an early start, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he will authorize $5 million in “quick-release” rebuilding funds. Damage to the state’s federally funded highways alone is expected to top $125 million, LaHood said.
The state owns 360 feet of temporary bridge sections and plans to install them on key spans before winter, Michael Hedges, structures program manager at the Vermont Agency of Transportation, told the Associated Press.
It is also negotiating leases and rent-to-own contracts with three companies to bring in military-style “Bailey bridges,” Hedges said. The bridges, made up of 10-foot sections of metal decking, may have to serve for 4 or 5 years until the state can finish permanent repairs, he said.

NFL: Jaguars Release Starting QB David Garrard

Posted by Unknown on 8:26 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars released veteran quarterback David Garrard on Tuesday, a stunning move that will save the franchise $9 million this season.

Whether it saves coach Jack Del Rio’s job remains to be seen. Team owner Wayne Weaver has said Jacksonville needs to make the playoffs for Del Rio to stick around for a 10th season. Del Rio made it clear late last season that he had grown tired of Garrard’s inconsistent ways, but the coach remained steadfast through training camp and the preseason that Garrard was his starter.
That changed Tuesday, when the Jaguars scheduled an afternoon news conference to discuss their decision.

Del Rio will turn the starting job over to Luke McCown, who outplayed Garrard and rookie Blaine Gabbert in the preseason. But McCown played mostly with and against second- and third-teamers. McCown completed 12 of 18 passes for 133 yards, with two touchdowns, no interceptions and no sacks.

Garrard missed the preseason opener because of a sore back, but started the final three games. He completed 50 percent of his passes for 216 yards, with no touchdowns and an interception. He was sacked three times.
Del Rio’s quarterback swap is similar to what he did in 2007, when he released Byron Leftwich in favor of Garrard after the preseason. Garrard played well that season, throwing 18 touchdown passes and just three interceptions.
He has been average since, with 53 TDs and 38 INTs over the last three seasons. He also has been sacked 117 times in that span.
His performance late last season was one of the final straws.

With running back Maurice Jones-Drew sitting out against Washington, the Jaguars put the game on Garrard’s shoulders and he struggled to handle the load. He struggled to read Washington’s cloaked defensive schemes and nearly ended the day with five turnovers.
The Jaguars responded by drafting Gabbert with the 10th pick in April’s draft. Gabbert might have had a chance to win the starting job, but the NFL lockout denied him a a summer filled with meetings, film work and organized team activities.
Gabbert was dropped to third on the depth chart last week.
McCown moved up to second, although no one knew he was actually auditioning for the starting job.

Garrard was hit repeatedly in last week’s preseason finale against St. Louis and had an animated exchange with his offensive line on the sideline.
That, too, had become an issue inside the facility, with Garrard pointing the finger more often than taking the blame. He blamed an interception against Atlanta on receiver Mike Thomas and then ripped the line for Thursday’s problems.
Del Rio called Garrard a middle-tier quarterback after the 2009 season, and Weaver challenged the quarterback to do more with teammates that offseason.

Garrard did.

He responded by setting the franchise record for touchdown passes in a season (23), enjoyed five of the best eight games of his career, and led the Jaguars to several late wins. But he struggled down the stretch.
It became clear Monday how teammates felt about Garrard. They declined to vote Garrard a team captain, instead choosing Jones-Drew and tight end Marcedes Lewis as offensive captains.

Thorium lasers could make nuclear cars a reality

Posted by Unknown on 8:17 AM

We’ll be honest. The future hasn’t quite turned out like we expected. While Saturday-morning cartoons promised us a world in which our fantasy-powered flying bubble cars would conveniently origami themselves into easily-transportable briefcases, reality has been a bit slower to abandon the traditional internal-combustion model. But that may eventually change. Scientists at research-and-development firm Laser Power Systems are working on a new turbine electric generator system powered by a thorium-based laser. If, like us, you spent the majority of chemistry class studiously analyzing the insides of your eyelids, you may not recall that thorium is a mildly radioactive metal with an atomic weight of 90.

That’s right, kids. We’re talking about a nuclear-powered car. Please insert maniacal laugh track.
The principle is fairly simple. The thorium would be lased to generate heat, which would then produce steam in a closed-loop system. That steam would then power a generator to produce electricity. Since it only takes a thin sheet of aluminum foil to shield the world from the weak thorium radiation and the element can’t be weaponized, it’s thought to be perfect for mobile power generation.
Scientists say that just eight grams of thorium could be enough to power a vehicle for somewhere around 300,000 miles of driving. If this all sounds a little far-fetched, it may pay to remember that thorium is already on automakers’ radar. Cadillac introduced the thorium-powered World Thorium Fuel Concept at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

8-Year-Old-Boy Stuck With Needle In Movie Theater

Posted by Unknown on 8:11 AM

Police are trying to figure out who purposefully wedged a needle into the back of an Ohio movie theater seat, sending an 8-year-old boy to a hospital.

WBNS-TV reports that the child was stuck by the needle Sunday and was taken to a Columbus hospital, where his condition was not available. Put police say he is expected to be fine. His name hasn’t been released.

Police say the device turned out to be a pen in which the ink cartridge had been replaced with a sewing needle. The needle and pen have been taken to a crime lab. Police went seat-to-seat inside the theater to look for any other needles.

The Columbus theater’s management has not returned calls for comment as of Monday afternoon.

Teen Loses Legs Trying To Hop A Freight Train

Posted by Unknown on 8:03 AM

A 17-year-old Colorado State University student lost both her legs when she tried to hop aboard a freight train and slipped underneath the moving train on Monday.

One of three males with the student was briefly dragged by the train but suffered only minor injuries. The accident occurred in the northern Colorado town of Longmont shortly after 1 p.m. when the group tried to board the northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, police said.

The student was taken to Longmont United Hospital by ambulance and then flown to Denver Health Medical Center. Denver Health officials said they couldn’t release any information about her, but Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur said he believed she was conscious and able to talk.
Longmont is about 30 miles north of Denver and about 30 miles south of Fort Collins, where the university is located.

No names have been released, but Satur said the three males with were between 17 to 20 years old. The female victim’s parents live in another state, which Satur didn’t identify.
The male who was dragged by the train was cited for trespassing, as was another one of the males, Satur said. A third male made it aboard the train and his whereabouts were unknown.

Satur said he didn’t know if the female would be cited.

“She’s got enough issues to worry about,” he said.

At Least 8 Reportedly Shot At IHOP Restaurant

Posted by Unknown on 7:59 AM

Several people have reportedly been shot at an IHOP restaurant in Carson City, Nevada. At least eight people were shot by a suspect carrying a semi-automatic weapon just before 9:00 a.m. local time.

Sheriff Kenny Furlong told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the suspect fired at restaurant customers before shooting himself. He said the shooter is not expected to survive, according to the newspaper.
Local and state police and FBI agents have descended on the scene on South Carson Street, also called U.S. 395, the main street in the state capital. Yellow tape surrounded the parking lot near a Kohl’s department store in a shopping complex across the street from a casino and hotel.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office reports that the IHOP is clear and the building is secure.
Some streets have been shut down because of the shooting.

Students Shocked To Find Dead Burglar In Living Room

Posted by Unknown on 7:56 AM

A botched burglary at an apartment near Ohio State University cost a thief his life when he severed an artery in his arm while smashing through a window.

Two college roommates found the bloodied crook sprawled on the floor of a Columbus apartment they’d moved into just a few days before, WBNS 10 News reported.
“By all accounts, it looks like a burglary,” said Sgt. Steven Little of the Columbus police homicide squad, the Columbus Dispatch reported.
The bungling burglar, believed to be in his 30s or 40s, apparently rummaged around the apartment in an unsuccessful attempt to find something to stop the bleeding.

“I thought it was a murder, at first,” Nick Bockey, one of the students, told WBNS 10 News. “[I] looked around for a bit [and] saw there was only one man. It’s kind of obvious what happened.”
He’s unsure if he’ll stay in the apartment.
“I don’t know, might move out,” he told WBNS 10 News. “I mean, we just moved in on Wednesday, and this happens.”

1,000 Texas Homes Burned In Past Week

Posted by Unknown on 7:51 AM

More than 1,000 homes have burned in at least 57 wildfires across rain-starved Texas, most of them in one devastating blaze close to Austin that’s still raging out of control.

Speaking at a news conference near one of the fire-ravaged areas, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said more than 100,000 acres have burned in the drought-stricken state.
Perry said more than 1,000 homes have burned since Labor Day weekend, but Texas emergency management chief Nim Kidd subsequently said that number of homes has actually been lost in the past week.

The Texas Forest Service says nearly 600 of the torched homes were in Bastrop County, some 25 miles from Austin. The agency said that blaze was still uncontained Tuesday.
Calmer winds Tuesday were expected to help in the battle against wildfires that flared up when strong winds fed by Tropical Storm Lee swept across Texas over Labor Day weekend.
Texas Forest Service spokeswoman Victoria Koenig said it was too early to say how much progress was made fighting the wildfire in Bastrop County overnight. The agency says the fire has grown to 30,000 acres.

“It’s encouraging we don’t have winds right now, not like yesterday,” Koenig said early Tuesday.
Even with the encouraging conditions, Koenig said it was a “tough, tough fire” that was raging through rugged terrain, including a ridge of hills.
“You can still see the hills glowing quite a bit,” she said.
At least 5,000 people were forced from their homes in Bastrop County, and about 400 were in emergency shelters, officials said Monday. School and school-related activities were canceled Tuesday.

U.S. Airport Security Will No Longer Require You To Take Your Shoes Off in the Future!

Posted by Unknown on 7:39 AM

This is pretty great. I always have a hell of a time trying to find a good pair of socks the morning I’m leaving for a trip. LOL!

The cumbersome task of kicking off your shoes at U.S. airport checkpoints may soon be gone, Politico reported Tuesday.
The 3-ounce restriction on individual liquids in carry-on bags may be here to stay, however, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Tuesday.
“We are moving toward an intelligence and risk-based approach to how we screen,” Napolitano said at an event sponsored by Politico.

“I think one of the first things you will see over time is the ability to keep your shoes on. One of the last things you will [see] is the reduction or limitation on liquids.”
The policies are based on demonstrated threats, current intelligence and the science of how much explosive material it takes to bring down an aircraft.
The requirement that fliers remove shoes and send them through the belt-fed X-ray machines followed the December 2001 “shoe bomber” attack. English al Qaeda terrorist Richard Reid tried to take down a U.S.-bound passenger jet using explosives rigged into the soles of his shoes, but the bomb failed to ignite.
Five years later British authorities uncovered a plot to take down simultaneously 10 transatlantic flights using liquid-based explosives concealed in energy drink containers, leading to the liquid restrictions.

Soulja Boy Apologizes to the Troops

Posted by Unknown on 7:33 AM

Yesterday SB caused quite the uproar when a song of his hit the net where he says, “F*ck US Troops.” Not the best idea! Today after the obvious backlash a statement like that would bring on, Soulja released an online apology and explanation. Too little, too late? Or do you forgive him?

As an artist, I let my words get the best of me. Sometimes there are things that we feel, things that we want to express, and when we put them on paper and speak them out loud, they can come out wrong. When I expressed my frustration with the US Army, not only did my words come out wrong, I was wrong to even speak them. So, I write this to give my sincerest apology to all members of the United States military services, as well as their families that were offended by my most recent lyrics.

As a young man who grew up in the post-9/11 era, I have watched our country fight two wars that seem like they are never going to end. I have seen thousands and thousands of our brave men and women get killed in battle and often times, I think for what? A lot of people in this country are struggling to make ends meet and I think a lot about what if we had never gone to war. Where would our economy be? Our schools, our after-school and work programs, our streets? I mean, damn, 48 people got shot in New York City just this past weekend … in 3 days … I’m not saying that it is just because of a bad economy, but at a certain point we have to take care of our own people.

In no way would I ever want to offend those who are protecting our freedoms … a lot of homeboys who I grew up with, a lot of people who come from the neighborhoods we live in … In no way do I want to hurt any of our honorable soldiers who put their lives at risk, regardless of how they feel about the two wars we fight in. I am just frustrated that we haven’t been able to bring you all home quick enough and my frustration got the best of me. I am deeply sorry.
