|Video| Auto Talk: Volvo truck takes on a Ferrari in drag race

Posted by Unknown on 10:21 AM

It seems these days everyone wants a piece of Ferrari, with countless sports car-makers gunning for Maranello’s territory. But Volvo? Volvo Trucks, no less?

Believe it or not, the latest drag race competition pitted a Volvo big-rig against a Ferrari 360 Spider. Of course it wasn’t just any old run-of-the-mill tractor, but the Mean Green hybrid racing truck. The beast packs a 16-liter twin-turbo engine that cranks out 1,900 horsepower and is further boosted by a 200hp electric motor.

NYPD Officer Among The 43 People Shot This Labor Day Weekend

Posted by Unknown on 9:21 AM

Brooklyn’s West Indian Day Parade left one man dead and seven injured. Monday’s gunplay brought to at least 43 the number of people shot over the Labor Day weekend around the city.

The News reported Sunday that 24 people were shot in the 24-hour period beginning 6 a.m. Saturday.
During J’ouvert, the traditional pre-dawn celebration leading up to the parade, four men were shot at an East Flatbush barbecue that turned violent about 12:45 a.m.
Tyrief Gary, 18, was blasted in the chest at the cook-out on E. 54th St. Three other men – ages 30, 29, and 26 – were wounded in the barrage, police said. The four were taken to Kings County Hospital, where Gary later died. The others were in stable condition.
“He was only 18,” said Dimitry Foster, 18, who went to junior high with Gary. “He was a good guy. This is shocking.”

Two men were shot at Eastern Parkway near Rochester Ave. on the sidelines of the massive march about 2:30 p.m. Monday, police said.
One man was shot in the abdomen and the other in the lower back after they got into a scuffle with the shooter. Both were expected to survive, sources said.
The gunman fled into the panicked crowd.

“Everyone started running,” said witness William Long. “I saw people knocking the barricades over.”
About a dozen blocks west on Eastern Parkway, the parade’s main thoroughfare, near Rogers Ave., a man was shot in the leg about 5 p.m. Monday and taken to Kings County Hospital, officials said.
“He pulled it out and fired off two shots,” parade-goer Pauline Mash, 29, said of the gunman. “The crowd just went wild running.”

Around 6 p.m. Monday, a 27-year-old man was stabbed in the back on Rutland Rd. and Bedford Ave., officials said. He was taken to Kings Country Hospital.
“There were thousands of people out here,” said Jerome Philip, 69, who witnessed the stabbing. “It was shoulder to shoulder out here. They couldn’t get an ambulance in so they had to wheel him down the block.”
At about the same time, a man was shot in the arm on Park Place a few blocks from the route, officials said.

In another incident, a gunman fired shots just a few blocks from the parade route, on E. 94th St. and Winthrop Ave., around noon Monday, police said. The shooter was arrested and nobody was hit.
The latest string of shootings came after the mayor on Sunday called the weekend’s surge in violence “unconscionable.”

Baby Dies After She Was Left in Hot Car Outside A Day Care For Hours

Posted by Unknown on 9:17 AM

Police in Ohio are investigating the tragedy of a 13-month-old baby who died after she was left in a hot car for hours outside a day care.

Capt Sylvia Trundle told the Akron Beacon Journal that a baby sitter brought five children to the day care for a play date on Friday at about 9:30am, but apparently only took four out of the vehicle.
It wasn’t until 1:55pm that the baby sitter realized Aolani McCray was missing and found the child in the SUV, still strapped in her car seat.
The baby was rushed to a nearby, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said she died of heat exhaustion, and the incident is still under investigation.
Police Capt. Dan Zampelli said: ‘We do know the baby was left for some period of time. Just how long, we don’t know.’
Charges have not yet been filed against the 30-year-old babysitter, who reportedly had no idea the child had been left in the car.
The girl’s family was stunned by the news.
Raymond McCray, Aolani’s grandfather, said: ‘All I know is I got home from the work and they was saying “your granddaughter passed away,”‘
Mr McCray said the girl’s parents were ‘taking it hard.’
A woman who lives near the day care centre said she felt terrible for the couple that runs it.
She said: ‘They’re the nicest people who would ever want to meet. I think they’ve been running a day-care centre for at least 10 years – and doing a great job.’
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Akron due to 90-degree heat and high humidity that made it feel well over 100.
Studies show that the temperature inside a vehicle left in the sun can climb to as much as 140 degrees within two hours.

Sperm Donor Revealed To Have Fathered 150 Children

Posted by Unknown on 9:15 AM

One sperm donor has fathered 150 children, leading to calls that cash-hungry sperm banks are allowing too many children to be conceived from one man.

The sperm donor is not identified but does have a unique number that has allowed half-siblings to get in contact with their extended family.
Cynthia Daily, 48, of Washington, used the donor to conceive in 2004 and has searched for his growing list of relatives, reported the New York Times.
It’s wild when we see them all together – they all look alike,’ she told the New York Times.
Parents, donors and health experts are all worried diseases could spread faster with so many children fathered by the same man.
They have even suggested that this raises the chances of accidental incest between half-sisters and half-brothers who often live nearby.
‘She’s been in school with numerous kids who were born through donors,’ said one mother, whose teenager daughter was conceived from sperm donation.
‘She’s had crushes on boys who are donor children,’ the mother told the New York Times. ‘It’s become part of (her) sex education.’

Pilot Was Communicating By Radio With Pilot Girlfriend Before She Crashed Into Him Mid Air

Posted by Unknown on 9:13 AM

he two pilots took off from different western Alaska villages Friday but met up in the air on the way to Bethel, Alaska. She was communicating by radio with her boyfriend before their planes collided in mid air over Alaska last week, killing him.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Clint Johnson told the Anchorage Daily News Sunday.
Kristen Sprague, 26, was flying a Cessna 207 operated by rural freight carrier Ryan Air, according to Alaska State Troopers.
She made an emergency landing with one airplane wing seriously damaged and wasn’t hurt.
The other plane, a Cessna 208 Caravan, crashed and burst into flames Friday around 1:30 pm near the village of Nightmute, Alaska, about 400 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska, killing Scott Veal, 24, of Kenai, Alaska.
Each was the only person on-board.
It was the state’s third midair crash since July.

A federal accident investigator has said two earlier mid-air collisions were marked by the same factor: aircraft that were difficult to spot amid mountainous terrain.
In Friday’s collision, the two pilots were travelling together to Bethel and were communicating on a prearranged radio frequency while in the air, Johnson said.
It’s too early in the investigation to say whether pilot error was a factor in the crash, he added.

Sprague had taken off from the Bering Sea village of Tununak, Alaska. She was headed to Bethel with about 50 pounds of aluminium cans for a recycling program, said Wilfred Ryan, president of Ryan Air.
Veal left from nearby Toksook Bay, Alaska, in an air-plane operated by Grant Aviation, an air taxi and cargo carrier.
Efforts by the Anchorage Daily News to speak with a Grant representative were unsuccessful.
Sprague, of Idaho, told the investigator she was dating Veal, who reportedly was going through a divorce, Johnson said.

‘They meet up in the air,’ Johnson told the Anchorage Daily News.
‘There’s some manoeuvring that’s done en route at about 1,200 feet (above sea level). The 207 pilot loses track of where the 208 is.’
Sprague remembered saying over the radio something to the effect that she couldn’t see him.
‘The next thing she knows is his air-plane strikes her right wing, and nearly severs the right wing,’ Johnson said.
The bigger plane passed underneath the Cessna 207 and came out on the left side of it, Johnson said. Sprague saw it spiral down, hit the tundra, and burst into flames, Johnson said.
She managed to land her plane on soft rolling tundra, about a mile away.

(HP) – The 660-square-foot Pink Palace restroom was built on Boston Common in the 1920s. It hasn’t been used as a restroom since the 1970s.
Boston officials announced Wednesday that Mayor Thomas Menino (meh-NEE’-noh) signed a 15-year lease with the Orlando, Fla.-based Earl of Sandwich chain for a takeout operation at the site.
Earl of Sandwich will pay $50,000 annually. It will renovate the interior of the mausoleum-like structure for use as a kitchen, with storage and prep areas.
The goal is to open the shop as early as next spring.
The Boston Common was set aside as public land in 1640. The restroom is called the Pink Palace because of the pinkish hue of its masonry.

Auto Talk: Honda recalling 86,000 units for fire, rollaway concerns

Posted by Unknown on 8:58 AM

It has been a tough year for recalls at Honda. Just last month, the automaker recalled 1.51 million vehicles in the U.S. for an engine stall issue. In May Honda recalled another 833,000 vehicles for an airbag issue.

Now Honda is adding another 86,000 vehicles to the tally for a pair of issues. The Detroit News reports that the automaker is recalling 80,111 2006 CR-V vehicles to replace the power master switch. The recall comes after the U.S. government had five reports of driver door fires that resulted from faulty switches, and Honda says the issue occurs when the switch allows residue from interior cleaners to accumulate. The cleaners could eventually wear out electrical contacts, which would lead to a fire.

Honda also announced that 5,626 2011 CR-Z models with manual transmissions are being recalled to update electric motor controls software. Honda has received complaints of roll-away problems that occur when the battery is low on juice and the engine is stalled. When this happens, it’s possible for the electric motor to rotate in the wrong direction, and when the brakes aren’t engaged, the vehicle can roll backwards even when the transmission is in a forward gear. Sounds confusing – and dangerous. Honda will reportedly begin notifying owners of the affected vehicles sometime in September.

A $5.5 Billion Bill Is The Reason Postal Service Might Shut Down This Winter

Posted by Unknown on 8:57 AM

The United States Postal Service has long lived on the financial edge. The agency is so low on cash that it will not be able to make a $5.5 billion payment due this month and may have to shut down entirely this winter unless Congress takes emergency action to stabilize its finances.

“Our situation is extremely serious,” the postmaster general, Patrick R. Donahoe, said in an interview. “If Congress doesn’t act, we will default.”
In recent weeks, Mr. Donahoe has been pushing a series of painful cost-cutting measures to erase the agency’s deficit, which will reach $9.2 billion this fiscal year. They include eliminating Saturday mail delivery, closing up to 3,700 postal locations and laying off 120,000 workers — nearly one-fifth of the agency’s work force — despite a no-layoffs clause in the unions’ contracts.
The post office’s problems stem from one hard reality: it is being squeezed on both revenue and costs.
As any computer user knows, the Internet revolution has led to people and businesses sending far less conventional mail.
At the same time, decades of contractual promises made to unionized workers, including no-layoff clauses, are increasing the post office’s costs. Labor represents 80 percent of the agency’s expenses, compared with 53 percent at United Parcel Service and 32 percent at FedEx, its two biggest private competitors. Postal workers also receive more generous health benefits than most other federal employees.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on the agency’s predicament on Tuesday. So far, feuding Democrats and Republicans in Congress, still smarting from the brawl over the federal debt ceiling, have failed to agree on any solutions. It doesn’t help that many of the options for saving the postal service are politically unpalatable.
“The situation is dire,” said Thomas R. Carper, the Delaware Democrat who is chairman of the Senate subcommittee that oversees the postal service. “If we do nothing, if we don’t react in a smart, appropriate way, the postal service could literally close later this year. That’s not the kind of development we need to inject into a weak, uneven economic recovery.”

Missing the $5.5 billion payment due on Sept. 30, intended to finance retirees’ future health care, won’t cause immediate disaster. But sometime early next year, the agency will run out of money to pay its employees and gas up its trucks, officials warn, forcing it to stop delivering the roughly three billion pieces of mail it handles weekly.
The causes of the crisis are well known and immensely difficult to overcome.

Lil Wayne Breaks iTunes First Week Sales Record!!

Posted by Unknown on 8:54 AM

Congrats to Lil Tunechi! As he rapidly approaches that one milli mark for the first week sales of his latest offering, Tha Carter IV, he’s already broken a record before the total sales figures come in! The record which was hit by Jay and Ye just 3 weeks ago has been broken now by Weezy!

“Carter” has sold over 300,000 downloads via iTunes in only its first four days of release, according to Cash Money/Universal Republic Records. That outpaces the 290,000 that “Throne” moved through iTunes in its entire first week.
“Carter’s” achievement is all the more impressive as it’s available through all digital and physical retailers, not just iTunes. Comparatively, “Throne” was sold exclusively through iTunes for its first four days of release.
Further, “Carter IV” is on its way to an overall first-week start of more than 850,000 copies — digital and physical sales combined — so say industry prognosticators. The tracking week ends on Sunday night, Sept. 4. We’ll have the final, official Nielsen SoundScan weekly sales figures on Wednesday morning, Sept. 7.

Elementary School Lowers American Flag… And Replaces It With Saudi Arabian one

Posted by Unknown on 8:51 AM

Parents of children at an elementary school in Colorado are furious after the American flag was lowered at the multi-cultural school and replaced with a Saudi Arabian flag.

As the tenth anniversary of 9/11 approaches, someone at Bauder Elementary School in Fort Collins appears to have lowered the American symbol while raising that of the Muslim country in its place.

The flag is thought to have initially been hung at the school as one of many posted around the site in recognition of the various nationalities represented by the young students.
The school’s principal insisted the flag was not raised by a member of staff in order to disrespect the American flag – and said the American flag immediately was returned to its prominent position when the issue came to his attention.
But parents argue the display was a direct violation of federal law, which states: ‘No other flag or pennant should be placed above, or, if on same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America.’

They argue it’s the result of the effect a growing Muslim population is having on the area.
A photograph of the Saudi Arabian flag was taken by a concerned local and first posted on the Greeley Report blog.

Taxi Driver Reportedly Locks Woman In Trunk After Fare Fight

Posted by Unknown on 8:50 AM

A German taxi driver allegedly locked a female passenger in the trunk for five hours after a dispute over a fare turned ugly. The 32-year-old passenger was traveling home in the northern city of Hamburg early Sunday morning when she accused the driver of taking a detour to increase the fare.

The driver, 57, allegedly attacked the woman, punching her in the face and pushing her inside the trunk. He parked the vehicle outside his house, and left the passenger trapped inside, the newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost reported.
The woman called the police on her cell phone, and was freed five hours later when passers-by heard her cries for help coming from the back of the vehicle.
The driver was detained Monday after a manhunt. The passenger was hospitalized, suffering from shock and severe bruising on her arms and legs.

Volkswagen takes another shot at single-seat mobility

Posted by Unknown on 8:46 AM

There aren’t a lot of cars out there that have more doors than seats. Usually it’s the other way around, but that’s what Volkswagen has in store with the Nils concept. The tiny one-seater packs two polycarbonate gullwing doors (plus a rear hatch) in a unique shape that envisions a future mode of transportation for European commuters.

Riding on four outboard wheels with individual fenders, the Nils is about more than its form factor, though. Behind the driver sits a 15 kW electric motor that delivers a range of about 40 miles, but with a 25 kW overboost function that can propel it to 62 mph in 11 seconds. Charging from a standard European socket takes only two hours. The diminutive concept also packs all the latest electronic safety systems you’d expect from a larger car into its 1,000-pound shape, built around an aluminum space frame.
This isn’t the first time that Volkswagen has toyed with the idea of a single-seat commuter, having showcased the Formula XL1 concept earlier this year. Nor will it be the only narrow EV concept the Volkswagen Group will unveil next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show, joining the 1+1 Audi Urban Concept in the group’s pavilion.

Soulja Boy Pisses Off The Military

Posted by Unknown on 8:35 AM

Soulja Boy’s latest track is causing quite the controversy right now. This track, titled, “Let’s Be Real,” goes right at the military and the FBI. “Fu*k the FBI and the army troops … fighting for what? Be your own man. I’ll be flying through the clouds with green like I’m Peter Pan.” Ummm…not the best thing to say just days away from the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. Actually not the best thing to say like…ever! SMH naturally, troops have responded and they’re not happy.

TMZ spoke with Fred A. Flores — a retired Marine who is now a commissioner for the L.A. County Veteran’s Advisory Commission. Flores tells us, “It’s a very offensive statement … especially with the 10th anniversary of 9/11 coming up.”
Flores — who has two children currently serving in the military — calls Soulja “Ungrateful” … adding, “He should apologize to ALL armed forces.”
“[The rap] is very irresponsible,” Flores stated … “especially for a person who is an entertainer for the youth of our country.”
Soulja Boy’s rep refused to comment.

Illegal Immigrant Tricked Out of $3M Lottery Win Will Collect Prize

Posted by Unknown on 8:26 AM

An illegal immigrant allegedly swindled out of his $3 million lottery jackpot win will finally collect his prize.

The man won the jackpot after purchasing a lottery scratch card at N&K Quick Pick in Spring Valley, N.Y., on Feb. 3.
Three of the store’s workers had allegedly tricked the man by telling him he’d be deported if he tried to collect his winnings.
“When he presented the ticket, they scared the hell out of him,” Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe told the Daily Mail.
Atif Ali, 22, Riaz Khan, 45, and Mubeen Ashraf, 22, tried to convince the man that he should name them all as co-purchasers, according to prosecutors. The three then allegedly claimed the money and cut the man out of the deal, the website reports.
Zugibe told the website that the man is entitled to cash in on the prize even though he is an undocumented immigrant.
