“Much of the world’s chocolate is quite literally brought to us by the back-breaking labor of child slaves,” a copy of the lawsuit says. ” Children that are sometimes not even 10 years old carry huge sacks that are so big that they cause them serious physical harm.” There are alarming allegations that some of your favorite chocolate snack companies exploit children.

The suit claims the companies use cocoa bean suppliers, who directly use children, who have been trafficked into this type of work. Those companies included are Hersey, Nestle, and Mars.

The lawsuit was filed by the law firm of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro.

According to data published by the United Nations, as of 2008, there were an estimated 225 million child workers worldwide.

“Much of the world’s chocolate is quite literally brought to us by the back-breaking labor of child slaves. Children that are sometimes not even 10 years old carry huge sacks that are so big that they cause them serious physical harm.”

A managing partner of the law firm, Steve Berman, says, “The consumers reaching out to our firm have been outraged to learn that the candy they enjoy has a dark, bitter production cost — that child and slave labor have been a part of Nestlé, Mars, and Hershey’s chocolate processing.”

He also highlights, “These companies fail to disclose their use of child and forced labor, tricking consumers into indirectly supporting the use of such labor.”

Although there’s been intense scrutiny over child labor and reformations of law have been initiated, it’s estimated 2.24 million children under the age of 17 still work in cocoa production in the Ivory Coast and Ghana.

Hershey did not provide a prompt response to the allegations, but Nestle and Mars vehemently claim they uphold ethical, moral and righteous business practices, and have zero tolerance for abhorrent policy.
